Rahab demands a covenant
I’m Andy Smith, Ambassador for Transform Work.
In Joshua 6:5, God tells Joshua that the walls of Jericho will fall down. A few weeks before, in Joshua 2, the Israelite spies encountered Rahab the prostitute whose house was on top of the walls of Jericho. Without realising it, she lived in one of the most dangerous spots on Earth. She had heard about the crossing of the Red Sea and knew God had given the land to the Jewish people, which was more than 10 of the original spies who had also passed through the Red Sea did. Ponder that one! I wonder how Rahab spoke to the spies about waiting for them. Did she say it in such a way as to ask where had they been for the last 40 years?
In verses 12-13, Rahab demands Hesed with the spies. She demands a covenant and what a bold covenant it is too. She doesn’t just want her life spared, but those of her family and all their stuff and she gets it. The covenant is identified by a red cord tied to the window, symbolic of the blood daubed on the houses at passover. Her reward did not end there either. Without knowing at the time, she became a descendant of King David, King Solomon and finally Jesus and appears in the hall of faith. Not bad for someone who had been a Canaanite harlot who was originally not even under the old covenant. If Rahab can make such bold demands, then so should we under the new covenant. Pray for your families, your work colleagues, your possessions, your workplace that they would be protected and know salvation. Remember, they might not have 40 years to wait for you.
